Creation of a style guide for AMS (Austrian Public Employment Service)

For the Austrian Employment Service (AMS), we created a style guide to ensure compliance with design guidelines. The focus was placed on ensuring accessibility for the first time. Accessible documents must be equally accessible to people with visual impairments as they are to those without disabilities. Providing such documents is an important aspect of digitalization. For the Austrian Public Employment Service AMS, this function played a crucial role when introducing a new system for document creation and output management. As a public sector organization, it is required (like in Germany) to meet European accessibility standards.

Our Task

The guideline is intended to serve as a template for employees when designing documents. The style guide documents the pillars of the corporate identity and ensures a consistent appearance.

Project Goals

The AMS style guide is used for both internal and external communication and is a binding expression of the Corporate Identity of the Austrian Employment Service (AMS).

The Challenges

In addition to creating the style guide, workshops were held and presentations were prepared to introduce the document to decision-makers.

What do accessible (business) documents look like?
• Structured texts that enhance clarity, with bullet points, numbering, etc.
• Formal text formatting such as headings, paragraphs, footnotes, columns, tables, etc.
• Use of easily readable fonts and font sizes
• Audiovisual elements, as well as images and graphics, described with equivalent alternative texts
• Colors not used as meaningful elements

Implementation

INVICTUS developed a comprehensive style guide that documents all design guidelines for AMS. The focus was on accessibility to ensure that all documents are accessible to various user groups. The introduction of the style guide has optimized the document creation process and helps AMS work efficiently and in compliance with accessibility requirements.
